The initials W. H. P. are written at the end of the memo and the author is believed to be William H. Parham. The content of the memo relates to quotes or statements made within reports that Generals Grant, Burnside and Meade made in regards to action in and around the Crater, at Petersburg. First entry. A reference to a statement in General Grant's memoirs states that - (partial quote) " ...Lee got up re-inforcements... ". WHP writes - " Now you know what troops these were". Second entry. General Burnside's report of August 13, 1864 states that colored troops reformed beyond the crater, and attempted to take the hill, but were met by a counter charge and broke to the rear. The enemy regained a portion of his line at about 8:45 AM. At 9:15 he received orders to withdraw. Third entry. A telegram to General Meade from a member of his staff. "Headquarters of Army of the Potomac, 8:45 AM July 30, 1864. One set of colors sent in, captured by the Negroes. (signed) W.W. Sanders Capt. 6th Infantry." This is followed by the question. To whom did these colors belong? Then answered - Taken from the charging Confederates referred to by Gen. Burnside. Fourth entry. Another telegram to General Meade from the same member of his staff. The time noted at 9 AM. "The attack made on the right of the mine has been repulsed." This was at 9 o'clock, and there had been a charge of the enemy- Who made that charge? WHP then ends with - The above are in accordance with my recollection of the time of the 1st charge. |
