Dates of Creation |
February 16, 1925 |
Scope & Content |
A - Letter to Miss Mildred Elder, superintendent at Roanoke Hospital from Holcombe Parkes, editor of the Norfolk and Western Magazine, published by the Norfolk & Western Railway Company. The letter discusses a story and photograph concerning the Roanoke Hospital to be used in the March 1925 issue of the N&W magazine. B - Four pages of a story alluded to in the above letter. Story is titled 'A Story of Unselfishness: Aitchpe [sic] Gets an Opportunity to Express the Appreciation of the Norfolk and Western Family'. Story talks of the new addition to the Roanoke Hospital, and the contributions of an anonymous donor. Originally, the property and and original hospital building were given to the Roanoke Hospital Association by the Norfolk & Western Railway Company. In 1925 a new four story building replaced the old Roanoke Hospital, and was dedicated to the service of humanity. The donation for the new building was given by David W. Flickwir in memory of his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Nalle Flickwir. The new building allows for the rooms of 55 patients, with the first floor being dedicated to quarters of resident physicians and visiting surgeons, the second to maternity cases, and the rest to contagious cases. The roof had a sun-parlor, and the basement contained the servants quarters, the morgue, storage rooms, and classrooms for nurses. |
