Two pages of the autograph book belonging to Miss Sophy Pole of Hagerstown Maryland, later of Roanoke, Virginia. The second page is autographed by Basil Zell of Baltimore, Maryland on June 24, 1882 and is inscribed with a poem: "Sophy had a little beau His hair was black His eyes were brown And everywhere that Sophy went Her little beau was sure to go He follered [sic] her to school one day And it was against the rule For handsome boys to walk With pretty girls to school. But still he lingered near And waited patiently about Until Sophy did appear Then Sophy and her little beau Did both walk home together And Sophy told her little beau That she loved him better than ever" The first page of the poem was ended with "Pro. Harter did turn him out". At the top of the first page, in a different handwriting, was the penciled inscription "Kiss me quick". The inscriptions are placed vertically on the page. |
