This letter headed "Ivy Creek, Sept 9th 49" from William Gilmer to his nephew, James Breckinridge, Fincastle, Botetourt County, Virginia, complimenting James on the nice letter he wrote, encouraging him to study and work hard so he could come to the University of Virginia and live in the new house he is constructing with several spare bedrooms, wants to visit Grove Hill in the fall to take the nephews hunting, gives news of his farm harvest and plans to plant wheat for next year. In a note to his sister Emma, William describes his new house (costing about $700) and is asking if his mother can give up her servant Delilah to him as he want to sell his servant Amanda and her child as "she frets me too much and is a most enormous rouge". |
