Letter headed Brenham Texas, July 9th 1877 from Jeff Bassett to his niece Nannie Breckinridge answering a letter from Nannie and telling her about the hot weather in Texas, 98 degrees as he is writing (and sweating), about the arrival back in Texas of his daughters after their visit to Virginia, thanks her for the greatly improved deportment of his daughters while in Virginia, and they have been called on my several young men and attended parties with them, tells of them learning a German language and their ability to recite in German, tells of his daughter's musical talent, his girls are thinking about going back to Virginia for their education, announces they have a new baby:"the prettiest of the whole lot", tells of Dr. Louis M. Bassett having a shortage of bodies to "carve, by way of improving his knowledge of anatomy" is moving to Houston where a yellow fever epidemic will probably offer him many more bodies to practice on, and finally the temperature has gone up another 3/8 degree and he will have to close. A short note enclosed with this letter is to Dear Momma, and request that she send her every day shoes, stockings and come [comb] and signed Ida Bassett. L |
