Letter headed Ivy Creek Sept.22 [1859 by context] from James Breckinridge to his sister Lucy at home. James is living with his Uncle William Gilmer at Ivy Creek in Albemarle County at this time. James is describing his life shooting Squirrels with his rifle in the morning and reading in the afternoon, gives a description of his meals including the contents of a Brunswick stew made with squirrels he shoots, tells of Delilah 9the cook) being too sick to work, but Sallie cooks for them, about floods in the area including the James and Potomac Rivers, saying "my poor susceptible heart went floating down the canal, [but] I am getting along without it". Names some other activities and persons who have visited, inquires about things at home and closes telling that Uncle Will has been playing his violin all the time he has been writing. |
