William Cameron letter of May 26, 1892 |
Dates of Creation |
May 26, 1892 |
Scope & Content |
Writing to Bernard from Tallahassee, Florida, Cameron says he has Bernard's letter acknowledging that the missive he sent has been received, and will pass muster with few errors. He asks Bernard to shape the missive into the form of an address given to the (Confederate) Camp and to quote the "War Record" as the authority, as Cameron had only memoranda and not the books. He then mentions an incident involving a Macon Martin in which he says that Bernard was surely correct. Cameron acknowledges Bernard being correct on the incident that occurred when they went into camp after the battle, and it would be a slip of the pen if it were told the other way around, as Cameron remembers going into the new camp. His horse was stolen that night from their bivouac, and he never heard of it again. Cameron is leaving for Chicago in the morning and has no time to write out the other incident, because he is under marching orders, and has a great deal of preparation to make. He will write an appendix in the form of a letter, giving that and other omitted incidents, which can be published separately in The Messenger, and then later published in book form. Cameron states that he can not promise positively. As to the facts of his life he feels Bernard knows as much as he does, but will scribble a few dates and will enclose some memoranda. He asks Bernard not to send anything further to Tallahassee. He will send a new address. |
