Letter headed Clerk of Courts, Botetourt County, Fincastle, Virginia, J. W. Matheny, Clerk and Turner McDowell, Dep. Clerk and addressed to Judge Mr. Gordan Robertson, Roanoke, Va writing to the Judge in reply to a letter from him and the Clerk is asking for all the receipts in this matter and any other items he may have paid. These items are for a Court of Appeals action. At the bottom of the page dated August ___1897 is a receipt record for $84 furnished by Judge Mr. Gordon Robertson and copied by the Clerk in the appeal of record in Robertson vs Breckinridge, also on April 9, 1900 another $51 for a copy of record since August 1897 in the same cause. This letter was signed by J. W. Matheny. A series of individual receipts dated August 1, 1898, Staunton, Va. signed by Jos. A. Waddell, Clerk (of the Supreme Court of Appeals) for $246.00 for Clerk's fees and cost of printing the record of the pending case Nannie B. Robertson et als vs. Cary Breckinridge, Exor, et als. Another receipt in the amount of $356.25 for costs in the same case. Next receipt dated March 5, 1898 an Attorney Wm. A. Glasgow paid costs of $6.25 in this case. The next receipt dated May 23,1900 Wm. W. Glasgow, Esq paid $6.25 (this may have been a duplicate of the previous receipt). The last receipt dated June 25,1900 to paid the Clerk of Court of Appeals at Staunton in the sum of $110.22 for the cost of printing the record #990, Clerks cost of $103.00 and Clerk's fee of $7.22. All these receipts were signed by Jos. A. Waddell, Clerk. The next item is personal letter (and may have been the cover letter for the pervious receipts) dated Feb.11,1901 to Judge Mr. Gordon Robertson from Jos. A. Waddell acknowledging receiving duplicate receipts for items paid by Mr. Glasgow, and a copy of the total costs of the Appellants in this case as certified to me to the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Botetourt. Two more paragraphs in this letter tell of personal relationships between these two families. Pencil figures seem to be a total of the above receipts for a cost of $483.72. Final document is an envelope on which has a summary of the cost paid by Wm. Gordan Robertson in the case Robertson vs. Breckinridge. The total amount paid was $483.72 with credit of $80. leaving $403.72. The return address printed on the envelope was Watts, Robertson & Robertson Attorneys at Law, Roanoke, VA. |
