Ensign John T. Parham was born in Prince George County, Virginia, October 26, 1843, and educated in Petersburg at the classical school of Professor William T. Davis. At the start of the war, Parham was a clerk in his father's store, the late Henry Parham, once the clerk of Prince George County, but at that time a merchant of York County, Virginia, doing business as a merchant at the half-way house between Williamsburg and Yorktown. Parham enlisted on the 24th of April, 1861, as a member of the Williamsburg Junior Guards, which would become Company C, 32nd Virginia Infantry, Col. E. B. Montague in command. Parham participated in the battles of Williamsburg, Savage Station, Malvern Hill, Sharpsburg (Antietam), Fredericksburg, Brook Church, Cold Harbor, Howlett House, and Fort Harrison. After the battle of Second Manassas he was detailed as a member of the regimental color-guard. At the battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) he was slightly wounded. In August 1863 he was advanced to color sergeant and in August 1864 commissioned Ensign of the 32nd regiment. In 1864 he was twice wounded, first at Brook church and next at Fort Harrison. At the close of the war Parham was engaged in the shoe business in Petersburg for a couple of years. In December 1868, removed to Norfolk, but returned to Petersburg by February 1870. In September 1876 he removed to Memphis, but remained there only a year, then returned to Petersburg in 1877, where he has since constantly settled. During President Cleveland's term as president, Parham held the office of deputy collector of customs for three years, but in July 1888 he was appointed deputy city sergeant of Petersburg and has held this position constantly since that date. |
