An 18" x 23" Commonwealth of Virginia, Department of Highways map depicting the primary and secondary highway systems in Botetourt County, Virginia. The map, dated January 1, 1965, is priced at 10 cents. The front has an illustration of the seal of the Commonwealth, and lists "District Engineer, Salem, Virginia" and "Resident Engineer, Salem, Virginia". The map shows the location of Botetourt County to the rest of the counties in the Commonwealth. A total primary mileage of the county, as of January 1, 1965 is listed as 106.84 miles. Two secondary tabulations indicate the mileage of various road surfaces in the county. A legend lists the symbols used to depict corporate limits, highways through towns, the county seat, county lines, railroads gas pipe lines and proposed construction of an interstate highway. A more detailed map of the areas of Eagle Rock, Glen Wilton, Oriskany (misspelled as "Criskany"), Fincastle, Jefferson National Forest, Salt Petre Cave, Springwood, and Buchanan. A short description of the county is included, indicating that "Botetourt County was formed in 1769 from Augusta and named for Lord Botetourt (misspelled as 'Betetourt'), Governor of Virginia 1768 - 70. Buchanan was the western terminus of the James River 8 Kanawha Canal." |
