Letter headed "Ridgway [school] March 26th 1854" from James Breckinridge to his mother, Emma Gilmer Breckinridge, telling of his desire to answer her last letter very promptly, asking about her letter stating that his "Pa had sent away Mr. Smoot for shooting Joshua" and expressing hope that Joshua [family slave] was not seriously injured; of his Uncle William Gilmer coming to visit and how much the students like to hear him tell his stories (they call him "Old Billy Gilmer"), about his purchasing a flute (for $17.00) so he can take lessons to play it, some news of family members he has been visiting, of his need for some spending money to pay his debts to "Ridgway Debating Society", they had a preaching service at school on Sunday, but the Rev. Holiday preached so long they was no time for singing, and closes with remarks about his studies, how much he enjoyed some cakes she had sent, about Cousin Lucy's [Minor] wedding, about a fight that brother Gilmer had been "thrashed very badly" by another cadet [at VMI]. |
