Letter form Alice (Watts) Saunders to her son, Fleming Saunders II, sending him news of the family, including the journey of her daughter Louisa with Louisa's husband Richard Terrell Davis to Charlottesville, her son Robert's return from Richmond and a visit by Sallie Gwathmey to his estate in Franklin County; reporting on the farming operations, including a delay in the sorghum harvest because of a broken machine, the impressment of some crops to feed the impoverished soldiers' wives and the destruction of a fence; and telling of problems with stealing, of which the negroes were suspected but the stolen items were not found in their cabins. Transcription by English Showalter accompanies the document. |
