Letter headed Camp of Instruction, Tuesday Aug 13th 1861 from Gilmer Breckinridge to his wife Julia telling of events at the Camp of Instruction, of meeting with various people and traveling to Richmond, about purchasing a barrel of flour which he said would feed 4 men for 83 1/2 days, that officers had to pay for all their meals, of meeting Billie Pegram who "had run off from Baltimore, passed through the Federal pickets and found one asleep", requests a firkin of butter and anything else that can be sent on the packet boat from Buchanan, some family news he has received, plans to send Lt. Richardson home by the packet boat as he is too sick to travel by rail, of his plans to get some teeth plugged [filled] soon, he is carrying a likeness [picture] of Julia in his vest pocket so he look at her often, tells of his plans to form a regiment and where the companies might come from, and that he expects to get an "office" in the new regiment, the Captain of the Hanover Regiment was a chaplain at the University [of Virginia] when he was a student and of his plan to send a picture of himself to her by Lt. Robertson when he leaves on the packet boat for Buchanan. |
