Letter headed Dec 10th 1863 and Dec:12 mailed at Frank Minor, the Regt. is going toward Charlottev (in pencil) from Gilmer Breckinridge to his wife Julia telling of not having paper to write letters and hoping to get a fresh supply in a few days, problems with the slaves who are with him and working for the Army, Jim is sick and headed for Uncle William [Gilmer's] place, and Joe is the only one they can depend on now, tells of seeing a paper in Richmond named "Magnolia Weekly" edited by one of Cary's class mate James McCabe, and the paper is running a romance writing contest with a $500 prize and he hopes Julia will subscribe to it, has a list of things he needs to be sent to him, thinks they are headed to winter quarters, but not sure where that will be, hoping Julia can come for a visit once they are settled in. |
