Scope & Content |
Believed to have some connection to the prior Object ID 2009.75.045, but there is no photograph attached to the memo written by George Bernard. It reads as follows: The battlefield of the Crater as seen from the car windows of the trains of the Norfolk and Western Railroad between mile posts 79 and 80 looking southeast about 20 miles out of Petersburg. Along the brow or crest of the hill, visible near the center and left of the picture, stood Confederate breastworks about 200 yards of which was occupied by the Federal forces and was the scene of severe fighting. The crater is in the clump of trees to the left of Grandfather's home, the roof of which is visible in the picture. For further particulars see note pages 229 and 230 of ... [could be pamphlet]. |
