Page one is missing. Laughton states that he had no idea a certain publication existed, and so there were no calls for it (something by Bernard). A Mr. English had never had a call for it either, and had on hand the same number of copies that West Johnston & Co. had sent. Laughton advises Bernard to advertise the work and let the public know where to buy it as he cannot see how else it can be sold. Also the larger number of the pamphlets that are sold the larger number of Bernard's book on "War Talks" will be in demand. If the most prominent chapters (like the one on the Crater) cannot be sold now when there are thousands of strangers in the city for a special occasion - how may you hope to sell the book? Laughton does not think Bernard has given much thought to advertising, which is necessary in the sale of all publications, and this is a business suggestion. |
