Title |
Honorable Charles F. Collier - Reminisces of the evacuation of Petersburg |
Dates of Creation |
May 24, 1894 |
Scope & Content |
George S. Bernard received from Charles F. Collier of Petersburg, Virginia, the latter's reminiscences concerning the evacuation of the Confederate Forces from Petersburg, Virginia, and the entry of the Union army into the city. He recorded his recollection of the selected burning of property within the city, by Confederate authorities, beginning April 1, 1865. He told about meeting with Gen. Robert E. Lee and being part of the Committee to surrender the city. He related that the city councilmen were divided into squads and were to cover the several routes that entered the city so as to meet the Federals and surrender. He and the mayor walked westward, in the direction of Fort Gregg, and ran into the victorious Federals. During the occupation of Petersburg, the Federal officers and troops provided protection, and order was restored under martial law. Collier then told how the Federal sutlers, began to do business. Collier received his first $10.00 greenback, in payment for his legal services. These recollections were sent to Bernard for publication in his second book "War Talks of Confederate Veterans". They appear here as cut from a newspaper article. On the bottom of the first page is the beginning of a typed biography of Charles Collier. Beneath the first part of the biography are two more typed half-pages. The last page of the newspaper article ends where the handwriting begins. The handwritten portion is part of object ID number 2009.75.002. |
