E. W. Cameron July 13, 1892 letter |
Dates of Creation |
July 13, 1892 |
Scope & Content |
Cameron writes Bernard that he has received the advance sheets containing his (Bernard's) address (presentation) and his own. Cameron already had Turner's, which Bernard had sent to Tallahassee, Florida, with the notes and additions made by Bernard. Cameron says that Keiley's letter, with Colonel Field's description, is valuable for filling in the outline that he (Cameron) finished. He was glad also that in nearly all the points the memoranda taken contemporaneously seem to bear out the accuracy of his memory. The next few lines refer to an incident that Bernard has described to which Cameron adds a comment. "The spy to whom you allude to was hung with very little shrift, and if I am not mistaken, with the running-rein from the harness of a mule team to serve as a rope, and from the branch of an apple-tree. He came to the head of the column as we reached a cross-road, and gave orders as coming from General Lee that the troops should turn to the right, that is down the river. But General Longstreet happened to be on the spot and knew that the exact contrary was the line...." The page ends at this point - At the top left, Cameron has written something with lines running through it, as if it should be disregarded. It is difficult to determine its meaning. Now here I come to think that it was Ritchie Hatcher who took (three words illegible) Who was killed at Crampton (Crampton's Gap) and that Ben was the boy (word illegible) and called Bones? |
