Letter headed "March 9th 1843" from Emma Breckinridge at Fincastle to her sister Lucy Gilmer at Leigh, near Hardin's Tavern, Albemarle, Virginia telling of events that led up to Lizzie Watts Preston's death in Abingdon and funeral at Oaklands, about how Lizzie and Mr. Preston read the Bible twice a day, about the reasons William Gilmer and Mr. Watts were not willing to join a church, states that Lizzie took sick on January 1, 1843 and felt she would not survive her illness. Emma has copied the words to a hymn titled "The Spring Bird Shall Sing Over My Early Grave" sung to the tune of "Long, Long, Ago." This hymn was sung at the burial service for Lizzie. Emma request that Lucy plan a visit to Catawba soon and share news of her children and many neighbors who attended the funeral. |
