Letter headed "Grove Hill, Jan 29th, 1858" from Emma Gilmer Breckinridge to her daughter Mary Breckinridge Woodville telling of expecting "considerable sleet tonight", what the rest of the family is doing, local news about their friends and neighbors, Mr. Breckinridge has increased Dr. Williams salary by $25 [per year} as "your Papa thinks he is worth more", Dr. Meredith does most of the practice among the servants [slaves]", tells of a trunk that was lost from the stage coach going toward Sweet Springs on the road near their house last summer, the stage driver had to pay $100 to the owner of the lost luggage and some the Breckinridge servants were clearing brush near the road and found the trunk which was ruined from being exposed to the weather, all the contents had been stolen except for 2 collars and a pair of socks, the owner's name on the trunk was F. H. Verdier, Bluffton, S. C. Letter goes on to tell of the family going to church twice on Sunday, about a large number of visitors who had appeared for dinner, James Bowyer was home from medical college in Philadelphia, closes wishing that Mary and her children could come to Grove Hill and "stay for a while for change of air and diet". |
