Letter headed Grove Hill, Dec 30th, 1861 to her sister Eliza Breckinridge from Lucy on page 1 and her mother Emma Gilmer Breckinridge on the back page. Lucy writes about Gilmer and Julia coming home for Christmas, all sick including the baby Nannie. Lucy plans to join Eliza in Richmond as soon as possible, tells of attending church last Sunday and the people she saw, of a possible wedding between Dr. B [Bowyer?] and Jane S. Their mother writes about the illnesses that Gilmer and Julia are dealing with, tells of her plans to send Lucy to Richmond on January 6th with Mr. Wood, cannot find a new dress for her in Fincastle, news that Mary B. Woodville in Sweet Springs is preparing to flee to Fincastle if the Yankees invade Monroe County, suggests the hospital may be broken up [White Sulphur Springs], has 200 to 300 men there, Cary fought in the battle at Dranesville and is OK, but one man from Fincastle was killed and his body returned to Fincastle for burial. |
