Letter headed "My Dearest Sister" with no date but from the context it will be in the month of May, 1862 from Eliza to her sister in law Julia Breckinridge telling of life and events at home, how they were passing the time, comments on "Mr. Grasty preached another sermon on dancing, a very poor one it was too", told a story about a visitor who had brought a bottle of wine, but claimed a little had leaked out, her father had playfully suggested he had probably drunk it himself, to which he finally agreed, as he had gotten cold while riding his horse to their place, of the wagon they had sent to Monroe County driven by Wilson (slave) who has returned and said the Yankees had done little damage there, they broke into brother in law Lewis Woodville's house, the runaway slave Reuben was the first to break open the doors, another slave named Viola attempted to keep some of the household items, but the Yankees thought she was merely trying to save it for her mistress, so they took several things, but discarded a pillow case full of pictures and books which Viola recovered. The Yankees did carry off 3 bags of wool and several blankets. Apparently Echol's Army came along after the Yankees killed cattle, hogs and took their corn, all of which they expected to be paid for by the government. |
