Title |
Cocke-Spur view 10 from scrapbook |
Dates of Creation |
May 4, 1914 |
Scope & Content |
Two photographs of the eastern lawn at "Cocke-Spur", the Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke, his wife, during the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. According to the May 5, 1914 issue of the "Roanoke Times", at four o'clock, on account of rain, the tables in the upper view were moved, one to the porch and the other to the dining room where Mrs. Hugh Trout, formerly Lenora Cocke, and Miss Mary Stuart Cocke served. The tall gentleman wearing vestments at center right in the lower view may be Bishop Tucker. The gentleman stooping over in the lower right foreground of the lower view has been identified tentatively as King Funkhouser who in 1918 wed Jane Cocke, a daughter of Lucian Cocke. The gentleman in the center background wearing the light-colored jacket is Whitwell Wentworth Coxe. The lady standing directly under the left window wearing a flowered hat is Whitwell W. Coxe's first wife, Emily (Beebe) Coxe. These photographs appear on page 12 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah (Johnson) Hagan Cocke. |
