Letter headed April 14th [1862] from Julia Breckinridge to her husband Gilmer telling of her great sorrow that she had not been able to travel to Orange Court House to spend time with him, all avenues of travel were blocked as the cars were not running at Lynchburg, Covington or Staunton and roads were too bad to travel by hack, comments on their victory in the west and hopes for peace if they can gain a victory at Yorktown, brings up the matter that the men in Gilmer's company are reported to be dissatisfied with his leadership, expressed great confidence in him as their leader, and suggests they do not understand how he leads and truly has their best interest at heart, mentions that Mr. Graybill had deposited $1,000 in the bank for Gilmer's men and none has been withdrawn, news about her company, clothes she plans to wear when they get to see one another again, hopes the horse that Gilmer has bought will be a good buggy horse as the Patrick (current buggy horse is very much on the decline, Ma had gathered butter, eggs, and sausage to bring with them if they had been able to travel, she gave it to Widow Maguire [husband had been killed in the war] instead. |
