Letter headed "Fincastle May 28 1856" from Edmund F. Bowyer to his cousin, Gilmer Breckinridge in Williamsburg, Virginia, (attending law school at William and Mary) telling of various events in his life and that of others: recalling with pleasure his time spent "on the shores of the oldest town in the state" (Williamsburg); gives the out come of numerous elections in Botetourt County elections, hopes that the "Know Nothings" will be able to take control of this blessed union in their own hands; some local gossip about a upcoming wedding, Joe Johnson was discovered to have been guilty of "aiding and assisting in setting one of T. C. Lancaster's negroes free by furnishing him with forged free papers"; a man named Springer was badly beaten after selling his farm to Mr. Lemons of Craig county, but is now recovering nicely, The Presbyterians are planning a fair in Fincastle for June 2; while visiting in Lexington he saw James Breckinridge (cadet) and tells of a new "Shanghai" drill "which is very is very funny indeed", the Presbyterian Church there is receiving many students and cadets as new members; about a student Washington College named Booker was shot by his room mate and died a few days later; Henry A. Wise is going to give a speech in Lexington on July 4, 1856 and a statue of George Washington is going to be placed on the campus of the Institute and hoping they will hear "an awakening of patriotism" in the hearts of all; about the death of Cousin Henry Bowyer's child on the previous Sunday, report of the serious illness of Susan Thompson who will soon die of consumption; and tells of his plans to become a doctor. |
