Scope & Content |
Letter headed February 1st 1840 from Mary Gilmer posted at Hardin's Tavern, Virginia, to her daughter, Emma Breckinridge at Catawba, near Fincastle in Botetourt County. Emma's sister added a note at the end of this letter. Mary Gilmer is discussing the possibility of Emma and Cary moving to Albemarle County and buying land near Mary Gilmer's place (Leigh). She gives a list of positive things that could happen including "increasing our lives by ten years if we could walk to visit each other every day." Mary's daughter Lucy added remarks on the same line, and mentions the doctor that owns land for sale has a breed of cows they call "churnbusters" and have started calling the doctor by that name. |
