Letter headed "Philadelphia, Nov 1st 1857" from Edward F. Bowyer to Gilmer Breckinridge, telling of life at the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, about his studies where he has six regular lectures and two private tickets (usually at night) which keeps him pretty busy, he thinks the medical college is fine, and considers the University of Virginia much the best school for learning the theoretical part, tells about "money matters being pretty bad- the local banks have suspended- Virginia money passes pretty readily here- Just as readily as Pennsylvania money.", tells of Philadelphia having eight or nine hundred medical students and the Jefferson College has the largest number, mentions a few friends and tells of the local weather being cold with snow coming soon. |
