Letter headed Avenel Sep 9, 1862 to Lucy Breckinridge from her sister in law Letitia Burwell (Avenel is the Burwell home in Bedford County) expressing their great grief and sorrow of the death of Fanny Burwell Breckinridge (wife of James Breckinridge) who passed away on August 26, 1862 with typhoid fever). Letitia states the family is so prostrated by this death they can hardly do anything, asks about Cary Breckinridge who apparently has suffered a wound recently, James has written the family to let them hear from him, "Rosa has been sewing very hard and has finished two beautiful brown Marino shirts for Jimmie (James)". Asks about the price of cloth for the negroes (men's) clothes in Fincastle. Sentence added at the end in pencil asking for stick of black sealing wax. |
