Letter headed Fredericksburg Aug. 15th 1863 from Gilmer to his wife Julie Breckinridge telling of recent events, he has had a visit from his Uncle William [Gilmer] and slave Griffin, is complaining that Griffin did not bring him a fresh horse, Henry Yancey went home and returned with a fresh horse and Cary Breckinridge was able to promote Yancey to Color Corporal, worried about deserters plundering in the mountains and the home guard will be afraid to stop them for fear of reprisals to their own property, Uncle William plans to go to Richmond and try to get Gilmer released so he can go home to manage the farm [Grove Hill?], "Walker's application for a discharge to go to the V. M. I. was returned by Gen. R. E. Lee", letter is being written with a pencil as he has no ink, tells of new uniforms sent from home fit well, about Yankee Cavalry being on a scout just across the river from them and some are expecting them to cross soon, "we have just eaten our first mess of corn. It cost $3.50 a dozen [ears], he is missing his wife and children. |
