Scope & Content |
George W. Camp was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on February 26, 1833, and was educated there. He served as deputy city collector under George Williamson and was collector of the city taxes of Petersburg during years 1857, 1858, and 1859. Camp was elected Commissioner of the Revenue of that city in 1860 and held this office until 1870. When he was not able to take the "iron-clad" oath that he had not given aid and comfort to the Confederacy, he was removed from office by General Canby. Although exempt from service in the army by reason of his civil office, he served in the Home Guard for several weeks prior to the action at Rives' Farm on June 9, 1864, between the Federal cavalry and the citizen soldiery. In 1868 or 1869 George Camp, with Isaac H. Small and T. Jefferson Clark, bought out the Petersburg Express newspaper. They changed its name to Daily Courier, which subsequently sold out. The purchaser changed the name to Daily Appeal, which was subsequently purchased by the publishers of the Daily Index, and then merged together with it, under the name of Index Appeal. In 1877 Camp removed to Norfolk, where he still resides engaged as a bookkeeper; he occasionally worked as a newspaper correspondent. |
