Letter headed "Leigh August 22nd 1842" from Mary Gilmer at Hardins Tavern, Virginia, to her daughter Emma Breckinridge at Catawba near Fincastle with many interesting events and persons names mentioned. Tells of going to church, changing preachers, a camp meeting going on in the area for the servants (slaves) and writing a permission slip for one of her slaves to be allowed to join the church [Baptist],discussion of the crops that will be harvested this year, remarks about families and friends, the sale of the 1300 acre Farmington plantation by Mr. and Mrs. White to John Carter for $12,000 and an 800 acre tract owned by Carter, mentions Emma's tailoring ability and warns that "Mr. B must be a little cautious when you get about the breeches lest you should begin to wear them". Encourages Emma with her Sunday school teaching efforts, includes a copy of an essay for curing a fistula on a horse that was healed after nearly 3 years of unsuccessful treatments by Dr. Lowry. The successful treatment was given by Mr. Hayes of Little York and healed the horse in 3 weeks. Tells more about the great scarcity of money, tobacco crop will be down, selling 1300 hundred weight. of bacon,hams, and shoulders for 10 cents [per hundredweight], and hopes that the economy will improve when Harrison gets elected in the fall [as president of the USA] Tells of Peachy growing leeches and testing them for drawing blood, gives a recipe for making starch and more family news. |
