Letter headed "Glencary August 10th 1853" from Emma Gilmer Breckinridge to her husband,Cary Breckinridge, telling about the health of Wilson (a slave who drives the carriage) who is very ill and had to be bled and dosed with calomel, and of Phil, another slave who she thinks can drive them home from the Springs in a single day, and she is considering leaving Maria to work for the bartender (a free Negro from Fincastle) at the Springs at the rate of $9 per month and which would allow Maria to take the baths and drink the water to improve her health, comments on the lazy people who live in the area,stating that "one good Negro man could do more" then the 8 or 10 local men who had been hired to cut hay, tells of her concerns about their son James who has not been doing well in his studies should be sent home "to be put to hard work on the farm for two months, it would give him a relish for study" and mentions all their children at home. |
