Letter headed "Pittsylvania Court H July 12th 1842" from George Gilmer to his mother Mary Gilmer at Hardin's Tavern, Albemarle, Virginia telling of his pleasure in receiving two letters, one from his mother and the other from his sister, Mary Peachy. He describes his potential for marriage as being none, agrees that sending Mary Peachy to Roanoke to stay with the Watts family and attend school will be good for her, and approves of brother John attending Washington College and suggest he should join the "institute" [VMI] and "the military exercises afford a fine relaxation from study and exercise in addition they give a man a good carriage& serve to improve both his manners and appearance...", tells of wheat and tobacco crop damage and success in various parts of the state, mentions his own garden is doing well, mentions his plans to travel to Richmond (for the first time), asks his mother to collect a debt from Garth and tell of his expenses recently buying Negroes, paying Harmer's debt, and setting up a shop for Lewis and buying leather and "has exhausted his small stock of cash". |
