Dates of Creation |
May 4, 1914 |
Scope & Content |
A photograph of five City of Roanoke policemen in an open-air Maxwell in front of "Cocke-Spur", the rambling Queen Anne style Orchard Hill residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke, his wife, just prior to the May 4, 1914 reception for Vice President, and Mrs.Thomas R. Marshall. Many police officers were present that day, some to direct guests to the northern driveway entrance to the residence and others to attend the civic reception for the public departments of the city including the fire department and the police force. "Police patrolled the neighborhood in an open-air Maxwell in an effort to keep the children from running through the yard and disrupting what was supposed to be a formal occasion." A Woman of Distinction by J. Hayden Hollingsworth at page 299. See also "Social News" in the May 5, 1914 issue of the Roanoke Times. This photograph appears on page 25 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke. |
