Photograph of "Cocke-Spur", the rambling Queen Anne style residence of Mr. Lucian Hayward Cocke and Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke, his wife, located in the City of Roanoke, Virginia on Orchard Hill at the intersection of Nelson Street and 9th Street SE. The Cocke's entertained the Vice President of The United States, Thomas R. Marshall, and Mrs. Marshall at an afternoon reception at their home on Monday, May 4, 1914. In its May 5, 1914 social column, The Roanoke Times described the event as the "most brilliant gathering of men and women ever seen in this city". Personal friends made up the guest list from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM followed by city officials from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM. These photographs appears on page 3 of a scrapbook titled "Cocke-Spur" formerly owned by Sarah Johnson Hagan Cocke. See "Social News" in the May 5, 1914 issue of The Roanoke Times. . |
