Letter headed Pitts C. H. May 16th 1834 from George H. Gilmer to his mother [Mary House Gilmer] and brother Harmer replying to a joint letter from them and tells of his preference that Frank should come to Mr. Godfrey's P. H. Academy and teach rather then attend the University [of Virginia]. He states that Frank can clear $300 and save the $2-300 per year cost at the University. This "difference of $500 per year is a good deal of money in any man's pockets these hard times". This school is "the best situation for a country school I ever knew" and a great many scholars are coming from North Carolina. He offers to loan Frank a horse to allow him to come home between sessions and states he can get board with the best families for $5 per month. He shares some local gossip about his brother William going courting in Louisa County, and a broken engagement for Dr. Bentley, tells of a recent four day severe frost that has greatly damaged many of the crops and trees, provisions are very scarce now. Letter is addressed to Mrs. Mary Gilmer, Hardins Tavern, Albemarle, Virginia. Return address is Pitts. Co. Virg, dated May 19-1834 and postage was 12 1/2 [cents]. |
