Letter from James M. D. Thrasher to his aunt (Mrs. Bandy?) from Camp Withers near Centerville. A soldier in the 28th Virginia Regiment, Mr. Thrasher wrote concerning his Uncle Billy's well-being; the movement of the enemy forces; the suffering in camp due to the cold weather; raids the regiment scouts performed; the high prices of goods -- shoes, 5 to 8 dollars a pair, boots, 8 to 15 dollars, cotton cloth, 20 to 30 cents a yard, mollasses, $ 1.50 per gallon. He also asks his aunt to excuse his badly written letter and to give his respects to his grandmother and relatives. |
