Letter headed "Leigh May 1st 1843" from Mary Gilmer to her daughter, Emma Gilmer Breckinridge, at Catawba near Fincastle, Botetourt tells of family and servants news, that Wilson (a slave) was allowed to take the ferry to visit with his dying mother, about the various activities Mary Gilmer has been involved with as to getting clothing and materials together for the family and 50 slaves, which she cuts out all the patterns by hand; about pruning tress and flowers, gardening, making rhubarb pies; explaining why she cannot visit at Catawba this summer; illnesses among the servants; and comments on the political elections just completed. A very long letter covering many subjects. |
