3. Groundhog Club Meeting, 1950 - A black and white photograph of the Groundhog Club meeting on Groundhog Day, February 2, 1950, at the American Legion Auditorium in Roanoke, Virginia. The Groundhog Club was started in 1917 by Robert H. Angell and his crowd. The club was originally composed only of native born from Franklin County residing in the city. The committee "lowed" others less fortunate to join. The 1918 annual meeting was cancelled because of WW I. By 1927, the club had 5,000 members, and women wanted to be admitted, which was unanimously voted down. In 1928, the 20th annual meeting had 6,000 members attending.
