1. 1915 Roanoke street scene - Picture of George Davis's car. Davis was commissioned by Edward Stone (founder of Stone Printing) to document the poor condition of Roanoke streets in 1915. Davis usually photographed his car in the street scenes that Mr. Stone later presented to Roanoke City Council.

2. Administration building at Catawba Sanatorium - Exterior view of the administration building at Catawba Sanatorium located in Catawba, Virginia, several miles north of Salem, Virginia. The date "1927" appears on the image.The sanatorium opened on the grounds of the former Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs resort in 1909 with a total of 16 patients. An existing resort structure probably met administrative needs until this more modern and functional building was constructed. According to an article by Melville Carrico published in the Roanoke Times around 1937 the tuberculosis facility was housing and treating 350 patients.

4. Building at Catawba Sanatorium - Exterior view of a two story building at Catawba Sanatorium located in Catawba, Virginia, several miles north of Salem, Virginia. The tall windows along the side would have allowed fresh air and sunshine, major elements in the treatment of tuberculosis at the time, to penetrate the building. The development of anti-bacterial drugs in the 1940s altered the treatment of the disease, and in 1972, after the facility at Catawba had treated over 25,000 patients, it was converted to a mental health facility. in this photograph the shadow of the photographer, George Davis, and his camera equipment are prominent in the photograph. The land on which the sanatorium stood was formerly a resort known as Roanoke Red Sulphur Springs. A portion of the information in this description comes from an article by Melville Carrico, staff writer for the Roanoke Times, published circa 1937.

5. Gentleman in a Riding Outfit - A young gentleman stands at the center of the image in front of a marbled backdrop and on an oriental style rug. The man wears a pristine riding or driving outfit, including leather knee high boots, khaki colored saddlebag pants and long jacket belted at the waist. His hands drop to the sides, emphasizing the leather driving gloves. His dark bowtie stands out against the crisp lapels of his jacket and the white shirt underneath. A straw boater with a black ribbon sits jauntily on his head, cocked to the right proper. He holds a thin, unlit cigar in his mouth. A map or some other piece of folded paper sits in his left proper waist pocket. On the reverse is the space for a postcard. "Davis Photo Co. / 104 W. Salem Ave., Roanoke, VA." is stamped at the left edge, "POST CARD / Correspondence Name Addresses" & "Place Postage Stamp Here" with an embellisment in between Postage and Stamp, which looks similar to "Coke," stamped across the top of the card. Written upside down, in faded brown ink is the following: Why don't you come and go galloping with me at Catawba! You haven't got the nerve. I believe you're "chicken hearted." Well alright.

7. John William Woodward Class A&ASR - Sepia toned photograph of the John William Woodward Class of A&ASR, taken sometime between March 29-31, 1922. Several men stand on the first few rows of steps to a large stately columned building, probably Roanoke's Municipal building, which was built only a few years prior. The only individual that is identified on the reverse is Frank Abbath Fitzpatrick - #5. Also written on the reverse is " Wife - Maggie Thomas Fitzpatrick / Sons - Earl A. / Horace S. / Beverly T. / Daughter - Elizabeth - married Ray Hayes.

This photo is part of a series taken by Davis, commissioned by Edward Stone of Stone Printing to illustrate the poor condition of Roanokke streets.The engine on the tracks in the background bears the name of Vaughn Construction Co., Roanoke, Va. The large brick building is the Melrose Distilling Company,Rectifiers and Bottlers. The building on the hill advertises "Use Caspers' sweet mash whiskey". The car is George Davis's Buick coupe. This photograph is identical to the photograph entered in the History Museum Photograph Collection as Object ID 1990.69.1076.

12. Roanoke City Market, circa 1925 - A black and white photograph of Roanoke City Market, Market Square and First Street SE in Roanoke, Virginia circa 1925. The view is looking south with many people and vehicles surrounding the farmer's market. The Hartsook Building is visible in the center of the photograph. Thomas Everhart Benton Hartsook was a prominent real estate dealer of German and English descent, who moved to Roanoke in 1891 and opened an office on Jefferson Street. By 1896, he had built the two-story brick Hartsook Building that overlooks Market Square at the southeast corner of Market Street and Campbell Avenue. The building served as his office and residence with his wife and daughter. The History of Roanoke County noted that Mr. Hartsook "purchased a farm of 526 acres, known as the Mill Mountain farm, within 30 minutes drive of the business center of the city, a portion of which he intends to plant to fruit." Known as the Hartsook Estate, it covered nearly half of the community including some of the eastern slope of Mill Mountain. It is currently a housing development known as Mill Mountain Estates.
