3. The Barrens - The Barrens was so named because the surrounding Indians noticed that in the spring after a forest fire that the land became lush with vegetation which attracted wild game to the area. The house named "The Barrens" was a two-story brick house built circa 1866 by Dr. Francis Sorrel and Letitia Watts Rives on the 240 acres of land inherited by Letitia. It was also known as "The Garden Spot of the Valley". This area flanked both sides of Hershberger Road. When Letitia Sorrel died in 1900, Dr. Sorrel sold the land to Peter C. Huff. The Huff family still owned the property when "The Barrens" was demolished in November of 1981 to become the site of Valley View Mall.
