3. Mrs. John Allen Watts - A black and white photograph of Mrs. John Allen Watts in fancy dress and hairstyle for some unknown occasion. Her maiden name was Gertrude Lee, and she was born in Staunton, Virginia, on October 15, 1862, a product of the marriage of Hugh Holmes and Mary Criss Lee. Her grandfather, George Hay Lee, served on the Supreme Court of Appeals of the Commonwealth of Virginia until the war broke out. After the war Gertrude resided in Salem with her family. Following her father's death in 1869 she resided in Baltimore, Maryland with her mother and grandfather, until her marriage to Mr. Watts in 1880 which brought her back to the Roanoke Valley. Mr. Watts, a lawyer by profession, became Counsel for the Norfolk and Western Railway Company in 1881 and he and his wife Gertrude became prominent members of the Roanoke community. Gertrude was active in the women's suffrage movement and served as first vice-president of the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia in 1914.
