Abingdon Branch Engineer Joe McNew buys a copy of "Grit" from Jerry Witherspoon. - Joe McNew, engineer hands Jerry Whiterspoon, a local boy for West Jefferson, North Carolina, a bill to buy Grit, the famous magazine intended for rural and small town readers which was then widely sold by young "newsboys." The magazine had been in continous publication since 1882.

After taking on water, McNew will pull the locomotive out and pick up the freight cars that will be going back north.

11. Joe McNew, Engineer, on the Abingdon Branch. - Joe McNew was the regular engineer on the Abingdon Branch in 1955. McNew was well known among N&W employees for hard driving, working to get every pound of tractive effort from the aged Class M locomotives. It was sometimes a struggle to get from Abingdon, Virginia, up over the three percent grade to White top, Virginia, and down to West Jefferson, North Carolina, but McNew was an expert at the run.
