  2. Deposition - June 27, 1769

    Deposition of Colonel John Buchanan, certified by and before William Preston, a Justice of Augusta County, on June 27, 1769. Establishes his 1/3 interest in money received for land called "Patton's Bottom" on the north fork of the Roanoke River, sold by executor of Patton's estate to James Bryan, millright, but owned jointly by Patton, Buchanan, and James Campbell.

  3. Draper's Meadows: The Facts and Fiction of Early Settlement - September 22 1968

    Newspaper clipping on the early history of Draper's Meadow. In 1755, Draper's Meadow witnessed a massacre of the settlement by Native Americans, along with the capture of Mary Draper Ingles. This article discusses the area, as well as a number of the early settlers in southwestern Virginia.

    Petition to the House of Delegates dated 1778 to confirm the late James Patton's petition for 100,000 acres, (of which only a portion remains); states that Patton secured the required settlers but because of the French and Indian War of 1755, county records are incomplete.

  6. Proclamation - October 10, 1746

    Proclamation - a true copy of an instrument setting forth terms of sale of 100,000 acres on Woods River and two rivers to the west granted to Col. James Patton, Col. James Wood, Col. John Buchanan, and Capt. George Robinson. Dated October 10, 1746. States prices and various conditions, including that purchasers must "settle, cultivate, improve, and be dwelling thereon" by specified date.
