4. Margaret Poage's Book - Bible of Margaret Poage. Leatherbound, published in 1836 by Samuel and William Wood, New York. A number of entries pre-date the publication of the Bible, with the earliest date being the birthdate of John Poage, June 24, 1769. He died before the purchase of the Bible most likely, as Margaret Poage inscribed the free endpaper with the following in iron gall ink: Margaret Poages Book / Bot of P. H. x A. E. Huff / Salem Roanoke County State / of Virginia May the 3 1845. Underneath, someone wrote in a different hadn in fading black ink: Margaret Poage was born August 24 1782. Died June 30 1869 age 86 4 mo. In blue ink, again with a different hand is written: John Poage was born June 24 1779 Died January 24 1840 age 70 years 7 mo.

   This is a copy of the will of William Poage made in 1832 and fully proven in the April 1835 Botetourt Court. Poage leaves his widow Elizabeth the lifetime use of his plantation and then directs it be evenly divided among his 5 sons, William, James, Robert, John and David.    This will conveys and divides equally land of John Poage, Sr., deceased, to all his children, namely George Poage, Joseph Poage, Jane Poage, Elijah Poage (under 21) and John Poage, Jr. Their mother, Margaret Poage, widow of John Poage Sr.,deceased, renounced her dower rights in this estate on February 20, 1840 so that all the children should have an equal share in the estate.
