13. Spanish American War Footlocker - Foot locker made with stiffened leather, copper, and metal fastenings. Large leather handles on left and right edges of trunk. Foot locker has two clasps and a heavy lock at front of trunk. When opened, interior is a deep red, with copper riveted around edges. Stiffened red leather removable insert sits on wooden pegs at left and right edges. On left and right edges, written in heavy black marker, with graphite lines still visible, is written: MAJ.R.G.S./ U.S.ARMY./ROANOKE.VA. This trunk was used during the Spanish American War by Major Richard Gordon Simmons, the Assistant to the Chief Surgeon of the Seventh Army Corps.
