6. Class Y6B Locomotive 2175 moves through the cut at Lithia. - Class Y6B Locomotive 2175 moves through the cut at Lithia. Winston Link reported that he and his assistant, George Thom, decided to make this photo at the last minute. That meant moving a lot of equipment quickly up and down the very steep sides of this cut, which was spectacular because of its narrowness. This photo shows an infrequently seen view of the top of the locomotive. Traveling back from the smokestack, one sees the oval sand dome to store sand for traction for the driving wheels of the low pressure engine at the front of the locomotive. Steam is escaping from one of the four safety valves. Each one would be set two or three pounds higher than the previous one, so if the locomotive's pressure was too high, the safety valves would open the sequence. Behind the safety valves is the steam dome, the highest point I the boiler where the steam entered the supply pipe to the cylinders. Behind this dome are two more sand domes for the rear engine. A little plume of steam markds the turbo generator which generated the locomotive's electricity.
