5. Chest - The chest is walnut with pin secondary wood, iron hardware, late 18th/early 19th centruy. This chest comes to the Museum & Society with a long history of ownership by the Vinyard Family. Like many of the early German settlers in the Roanoke Valley, the Vinyards first settled in Pennsylvania before heading south into Virginia. The chest provides ample evidence of that heritage. The sturdy construction with walnut boards, exposed dovetail joints, and most profoundy, the charming heart-shaped iron back-plates for teh side handles, all point to Germanic furniture traditions. Whether the chest is from Pennsylvania or Virginia is yet to be determined. However, should tests be conducted to determine if the pine wood used in the chest is yellow pine, as opposed to white pine, then it would be more likely that the chest was made in Virginia.

6. Correspondence - December 31, 1860

   This letter from C. O. Vinyard in Lancaster, Texas to his father and mother (probably the Vinyard family here in Roanoke) was written on December 21, 1860 and contains opinions on the election of Abraham Lincoln, secession, purchase of land for which he is asking his father to send money, horses, his new baby George, who wanted him to meet him at the riverboat landing, his mother and her health, and Lou who may have been the wife of C.    This a deed for 250 acres sold by the Commonwealth of Virginia (signed by the Lt. Governor Beverly Randolph) to Richard and Thomas Bandy and Christian Wynard (Vinyard) [the said Richard and Thomas Bandy were assignees of John Hawkins] for one pound five shillings sterling.
