1. Colonel William Watts - A black and white photographic portrait of Colonel William Watts, who was born December 20, 1817, at the family estate known as "Oaklands", and died on May 1, 1877. He was educated in medicine and law at the University of Virginia and returned home to succeed his father as the Commonwealth's Attorney of Roanoke County. He was a member of the State Constitutional Convention of 1850-51. At the age of 44, he joined the Roanoke Greys at the outbreak of hostilities and was promptly elected a lieutenant. By his gallantry and qualities of leadership, he rose to the rank of colonel.

   Envelope addressed to Col. William Watts in Big Lick, Roanoke City. In the upper left hand corner of the envelope is an embossed 'R & CO.' in elaborate gothic lettering, 'Tailors' embossed in all caps underneath. Stationery is from Anderson & Son at 148 Baltimore St, Baltimore.

   This item consists of two obituary notices that have been cut-out and pasted to a piece of letterhead from the office of Furman Whitescarver, an attorney at Salem, Virginia.
