6. American Theatre, circa 1945 - A black and white photograph of the American Theatre, located at 215 South Jefferson Street in Roanoke, Virginia. This photograph was taken circa 1945. The American Theatre opened its doors on March 26, 1928, and closed on September 30, 1971. This movie "palace", with its fish pond, grand foyer, mosaic tiles, wrought-iron chandeliers, and swag-draped balcony, was razed in 1973 for the new First National Exchange Bank. Henry B. Boynton also had a hand in its design and construction. The firm of Smithey and Boynton designed and built many famous buildings in the valley, such as the Shenandoah Life Building.

    One newspaper clipping dated May 20, 1967 and titled "Lions Official Lauds Dr. Gill." Aubrey D. Green of York, Alabama, past president of Lions International, delivered a memorial tribute honoring Dr. E. G. Gill at the Virginia State Lions Club Convention held at the American Theater in Roanoke, Virginia.

Traffic lights are suspended above the street in the distance. Cars are parked along both sides of the street.

20. The American Theater - The American Theater on Jefferson Street in the early 19-teens with young men in front. THere appears to be a vendor stall of some sort and a ticket booth in the opening. Caption at the bottom says "The American Theater on Jefferson Street was erected by the YMCA in 1902 and did not become a motion picture house until 1913."
